GIVING TUESDAY

financial. Please remember that even the smallest of gifts will make a difference to someone in need. I do know that regardless of what or how much you give you will receive much more in return. North Iowa let’s show RADICAL GENEROSITY this holiday season!

Janet Johnson Globe Gazette Publisher

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012, as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to give back. It is described as a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. Our world has seen many ups and downs in the past year, however, the one thing that I put my faith in is the generosity of our community. Our non-profits are the unsung heroes of our community, they are the heart of Northern Iowa. They touch our lives in so many ways from basic needs like food and clothes, to spiritual, cultural, social and so much more. My challenge to each person during this time of year is to find a non-profit to support in some way; volunteering your time, giving of your talents or

Winston Churchill said, “From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” Wishing you and your family a Blessed Holiday Season Janet Johnson Publisher

If you are a non-profit that would like to participate in this section next year. Please contact me at janet.johnson@ globegazette.com

GIVING TUESDAY

GivinG Tuesday is a GreaT Way To help!

2021 has been a challenging year for the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. COVID-19 has still created many of our volunteers not able to help at the food bank, clients uncomfortable being out to get food, and some food items very challenging to obtain. Currently the food bank is back to client choice with a volunteer as well as working to maintain keeping social distance and limiting the number of people in the building at the same time. Masks are required if you are not fully vaccinated. We understand COVID-19 is still a major issue but continue to work daily to provide food to those who are in need. We are appreciative of all your contributions, whether it’s an individual gift, or was Grab n Give, Give Where You Live, the MCHS-Newman baseball game,, church or service club organization or company fundraiser or growing extra produce for us.

This past year (Sept 1, 2020 – Aug 31, 2021) we distributed food boxes to make 141,468 meals for 5,710 families which is 11,789 individuals. We provided food to individuals in 64 communities with 67.59% staying in Cerro Gordo County. Many of those outside the county work here and need the help due to low wages. This is how your financial donations helped. We distributed 654,139 pounds of food and milk; 164,216 pounds of bread or sweets; and 20,193 pounds of non-food items (soap, toilet tissue, toothpaste and toothbrushes). All donations are appreciated. Your tax deductible donation helps us buy the food and nonperishables that we give out each day to individuals and families in need. We are a 100% volunteer organization (89 volunteers logged 11,320 hours our last fiscal year) so your donation is used strictly for the purchase of food or a small amount to maintain our facility.

Sponsored by

volunTeerinG! The food bank is also in need of more volunteers as some of our regulars do leave for the winter. We are down 100 volunteers from last year so we have a big need for drivers to pick up donations, people to stock the shelves, people to work with our clients, people to sort produce, and people to help with some computer work. If you can donate 2-3 hours a week, please give us a call (641) 424-3073

Financial donations can be mailed to: hawkeye harvest Food Bank, po Box 1565, Mason City, ia 50402-1565

Cheer Fund

94 years of helping needy North Iowans have a brighter holiday

The spirit of Christmas Since 1927, the Christmas Cheer Fund has received thousands of letters from children and adults in North Iowa asking for a little help to brighten the holidays. The requests are often not for “gifts”, but help with necessities like food, warm socks or a coat. Other letters are from North Iowa residents who, in their generosity, give the donations that help so many. No donation is too small, from the pennies gathered by kindergartners, to the generous checks given in memory of loved ones. In the past 94 years, you have given over $3.5 million to help fellow North Iowans in need of a little cheer for the holidays. This year’s goal is $125,000.

Cheer Fund donations or referrals may be mailed to: Christmas Cheer Fund, PO Box 271, Mason City IA 50402-0271 or dropped off at the Globe Gazette office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 687 S.
