Small Business Saturday

GREEN SHOOT MEDIA

ight between Black Friday and Cyber Monday — two of the largest shopping days of the year — is Small Business Saturday. It was first celebrated in 2010 to call attention to small businesses and draw crowds to shop unique products and

services. American Express, part of a partnership that established Small Business Saturday, says that in 2020, Americans spent at estimated $19.8 billion at independent retailers and restaurants. And that was during a pandemic.

Shopping tips for Small Business Saturday

Look for special deals, both online and in store. A popular trend among small business owners is to offer steep discounts on gift cards or certificates, which are just the right size for those people that you never know what to get. Also look for small businesses that are teaming up with nearby eateries or cafes. For instance, one may offer a deal if you present a receipt from the other. Remember that small businesses doesn’t just mean gifts and crafts. Small businesses can mean your landscaper, house painter or other tradesperson, too. Also consider book shops, boutiques, service providers, gyms and more. Look into buying services in advance for friends and family members, such as yard services in

the spring or ten yoga classes. Buying in advance makes a great gift and really helps the small business owner, who gets to hold onto and use the cash well in advance of providing the services.

BOOSTS

Branch out

Remember to shop in your town, but don’t be afraid to branch out a little and hit small businesses that are just a road trip away. Browse social media or the newspaper and find nearby businesses that you may not have even heard of previously. Look at this Small Business Saturday as an opportunity to get out of the (big) box and try out some shops and services that are a little off the beaten path. If you’re traveling to shop, remember to get gas out of town and grab a bite to eat.

Great gifts for party hosts and unexpected holiday guests KATHRYN WEBER

Tribune News Service

FOR YOUR HOLIDAY GIFTS

It’s the holiday season, the doorbell rings, and there’s a friend who’s stopped by for a few minutes to drop off a gift. But you don’t have a reciprocal gift. It feels uncomfortable when this happens; and when you promise to drop by later with a gift, it feels even more guiltladen. Or, you’re invited to a spontaneous gathering and don’t have time to look for a host gift! Take out the worry by having some items on hand that make a wonderful gift for those surprise visitors and impromptu invitations.

Be prepared

Nothing feels as special as a beautifully wrapped gift. And when it’s the holidays, having a pile of gorgeous gifts feels extra special. Use these tips to get your packages wrapped in record time and looking fabulous.

1. Step up

While it’s tempting to wrap gifts on the floor or on a bed, it’s always better to wrap on a flat, even surface. Set up your dining room table with a table protector pad or tablecloth so you have a nice, large flat surface on which to wrap.

2. Set up wrapping space

Add a large can or small box to the table to fill with scissors, felt markers, sticky notes, pens and wire snips. Have two heavy office-style tape dispensers for tape, and use large rolls of tape to make your wrapping time more productive. Use one dispenser for regular tape and the other for double sided.

3. Simplify paper

Rather than having multiple rolls of different papers, look for larger rolls that give you more wrapping per role. Using no more than three papers give your gifts a fashionable look. Buy large rolls online at websites like Papermart.com and Nashvillewraps.com.

4. Buy bulk ribbon

Hands down, gift wrapping is easier when you have plenty of ribbon. Forgo ribbons on rolls that are only a few yards long. Instead, go for 100-yard bolts of grosgrain in standard colors like red, white or blue (Uline.com) or choose luxurious double sided satin for something dresser (Hairbowcenter.com). These will be your go-to ribbons all year long. Fashion simple, but elegant bows and tuck in ornaments, greenery or picks for a custom look. And at around $20 a roll, you’ll save more money in the long run than buying those small rolls that cost up to $6 or more for just three to six yards.

5. Customize gift tags

Create gift tags from holiday scrapbooking paper. Punch with a hole, and tie with holiday twine, ribbon or pipe cleaners. Embellish with glitter glue and scrapbooking stickers for a unique look. Coordinate tags with wrapping paper patterns for customized packaging.

6. Make an assembly line

If you have a large number of gifts to wrap, try an assembly line to wrap them quickly. Using sticky notes, write out who the gift is to and from. Wrap all your gifts at one time, adding the sticky notes to each box to remember who they go to. Then, add all the bows, topper decorations and gift tags at the same time. This assembly line process gets your wrapping done faster and easier.

7. Dress up bags

Think you can stuff in some tissue in a gift bag and forget it? Why not give your gift bags an extra personal touch by adding a bow and a pick to the handles? These bags will look more appealing and attractive for that extra step — and it discourages peeking.

8. Tie beautiful bows

It’s really easy to tie a beautiful bow. Wrap ribbon around the gift on the long side, tie at the back and then wrap on the short side. Before tying, tuck both ends of the ribbon under the long side and then tie in a knot. Next, make two loops like when you learned to tie your shoes, cross, and then pull. Voila! The perfect bow.

Whether the holidays are upon us or not, it’s always a nice idea to have a gift wrapped and ready. You never know when you might need one of these impromptu gifts for the pharmacist (who always rushes your prescriptions for you), the librarian, your mail delivery person, a teacher, a neighbor or just a friend. Gifts like boxed scented soaps make a sweet-smelling present, as do scented candles. Other lovely gifts that are always appreciated include a nice set of coasters or a small book of appetizer recipes. Having them wrapped and at the ready makes a nice gift for the holidays or any time of year. Something top of mind right now is the plastic straw. Have a set or two of Klean Kanteen reusable straw sets from Target. For about $10, you get a gift to give that’s in touch with the times and has some cool factor too.

Be creative

There’s always someone who enjoys homemade gifts. Give the gift of indulgence by making some presents that speak of relaxation. Try making your own bath salts. Pick up some pretty jars and an online recipe for homemade bath salts that include essential oils. Or, use a linen bag and create a tea bag for the bath. You can also try creating a homemade sugar or lip scrub using a recipe online. These can also make wonderful stocking stuffers. Check out gardentherapy.ca for ideas.

Be bubbly

Many appreciate a nice bottle of wine. It’s easy to keep a few on hand, wrapped and ready to go. For something extra special, wrap up a nice bottle of sparkling wine and a pair of decorated glasses. By adding a pair of glasses, it makes a simple bottle of wine seem a bit more special and less ho-hum. Or, create a bag for coffee or tea lovers with a special bag of tea or coffee and a pair of mugs or antique tea cups.

Be fancy

Take your host gift to another level with a beautiful coffee table book. Something from the area where you live or a book of nature photographs makes a nice addition to any home. Or, hand over a holiday selection of chocolates from Vosges. With its regal purple packaging, it’s truly a decadent indulgence.

hether your grandparents live close by or far away, have a lot of hobbies or have not yet retired, you can find a great gift for them. If you don’t know what your grandparents might like or what they might use, try to find gifts that would be meaningful, thoughtful or practical. The options are endless and although it may feel overwhelming to find the perfect thing, you really can find something they are sure to love that suits them well.

Things to consider before purchasing a gift for your grandparents The occasion: While you don’t need a reason to spoil your grandparents, many gift items can be themed for specific holidays or milestones. Some are even customizable. If you want your gift to have a sentimental touch, look for something that can be personalized with an engraving, embellishment or photo. The type of gift: Any gift is appreciated, but you should decide if you’re trying to put a smile on their face with a useful, fun gift or bring tears to their eyes with a sentimental one. Knowing what type of desired outcome you’re hoping for will help narrow down your product selection. Budget: While we can’t put a price on our grandparents’ love, there are plenty of budget-friendly gifts. Typically, you can find nice gifts for $15-$50. Set your budget before you start shopping. You may find that you want to buy one gift for both grandparents, or individually get them each something. Knowing how much you want to spend or can afford to spend may help you decide what to buy. Smiles for Grandparents Photo Album This is a wonderful option for one grandkid to give or to have all the grandchildren chip in and purchase. Save time with these party meatballs appetizer, and you don’t have to mess with making the sauce from scratch thanks to the use of jarred ingredients. To prepare the meatballs, start by combining ground pork, beef, binders and seasonings together in a stand mixer. In addition to getting things mixed perfectly, this technique also saves you time. Pour the chili sauce and jelly into the slow cooker then roll your meatballs. Place the meatballs on top of the sauce mixture. Let the meatballs cook on low for about three hours, turning halfway. Once cooked, stir the meatballs so that they’re well coated in the sauce. To serve, place toothpicks in the center of the meatballs and add them to a plate.

EAT AND DRINK FOR THE

HOLIDAYS GREEN SHOOT MEDIA

When you’re planning your holiday shindigs, make sure you turn to local restaurants, food trucks and cafes for your catering needs. If you’re not planning a big soirée, make sure you factor them in to your holiday shopping plans by stopping in for a bite while you’re out filling up the sleigh or even gifting gift cards from your favorite local spots. Here are some hints for eating locally that you may not have thought of from USA Today.

Bake with local grains

Holiday baking is a family favorite. This year, look for locally grown grains and flavors to add to your rotation of recipes. Visiting a farmers market is a great way to learn what’s grown nearby, from grits to locally processed flours.

Buy meats from local sources

Big holiday meals call for quality proteins. Locally based ranchers and fisherfolk offer fresh, often organic, meats and seafoods that are well worth every penny. The experts at the butcher’s and fish shops can even tell you how to stretch

your dollar by suggesting lower-priced cuts and fish that taste the same (or even better) than their expensive cousins. While you’re there, ask for any specials they may have and suggestions for recipes. You will probably learn a thing or two and come out with a new favorite holiday dish.

Go to the baker

While you’re at the farmers market or out visiting the butcher, check out deals at local bakeries, too. Pick up some breads to go on your holiday table, or look for showstopping confections with a local flavor that can’t be beat. These make great host or hostess gifts, too, and are always welcome at the office party.

Stock the bar with local beer, liquor

Craft brewing is experiencing a surge in popularity, as is small-batch liquor. Most every town or city nowadays can boast of at least one local brewery, and these are great places to find holiday gifts and libations. Look for small batch or special releases you can only get by dropping by the shop. While you’re there, ask the staff for their favorite cocktail recipe using their wares.

Breakfast casserole with sausage INGREDIENTS

TO THE HOLIDAYS MADELINE BUIANO | The Daily Meal

The best way to make Christmas feel a little less daunting is to stick with some of your most beloved traditions. And truly, nothing will remind you of home more than a classic breakfast casserole. You know the one, with torn pieces of bread, tons of cheese and savory sage-flavored breakfast sausage. Bring the comforts of childhood to your home this holiday. And the best part? You don’t even have to wake up early to make it — prep the dish the night before and pop it into the oven Christmas morning. Not only do breakfast casseroles have a level of nostalgia, they’re also a great way to use up any ingredients in the fridge you need to get rid of. Have eggs that are about to ex-

pire? Great, you’ll need five of them for this recipe. Have frozen bread you forgot about? Line the bottom of the casserole dish with it. Breakfast casseroles have a few different iterations. For this recipe, start by cooking and draining the fat from the sausage and then prepare your egg mixture. Once that’s done you can assemble the casserole. Line the bottom of the dish with the bread pieces then top it with the cooked sausage, cheese and egg mixture (in that order). Store the casserole in the refrigerator overnight and pop it into the oven on Christmas morning and let it bake for about 45 minutes. If you’re like most people, casseroles aren’t just relegated to Christmas morning, they’re a day long affair.

1 tablespoon butter 1 pound ground breakfast sausage 1 teaspoon ground sage 2 cups half and half 5 large eggs 1 teaspoon paprika

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground sausage with 1 teaspoon of ground sage, salt and pepper. Continue cooking until sausage is fully cooked, crumbly and no longer pink, about 8 minutes. 2. Drain the fat from the sausage. Set aside. 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together half and half, eggs, paprika, salt and pepper. Set aside. 4. Grease a 9x13 glass casserole dish using 1 tablespoon of butter. 5. Cut rolls or bread into 1-inch pieces. 6. Assemble the casserole: Line the bottom of the casserole dish with the bread

Add cheese on top of the sausage. Give the egg mixture one quick final whisk and then pour that over the cheese. 7. Cover the casserole with aluminum foil. Refrigerate overnight, or at least 8 hours. 8. After refrigerating, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 9. Bake the covered casserole until golden, about 45 minutes. 10. How to make DIAMOND BRIDGES

The Daily Meal

When it comes to the holidays, food and drink are just as important as presents. Some households have traditions such as baking Christmas cookies to leave out for Santa Claus or building gingerbread houses together. When it comes to drinks, though, there’s one holiday cocktail that’s just as famous as hot cocoa: eggnog. Much like candy corn, most people seem to have a strong opinion on eggnog. Some people absolutely could nog all night, while others are completely thrown off at the thought of chugging down an egg yolk and milk mixture. Though eggnog may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are many different variations you can make for your Christmas party guests or just for yourself that will suit your taste.

Eggnog martini INGREDIENTS

 4 ounces light cream  2 ounces white chocolate

liqueur  ¼ teaspoon McCormick Ground Nutmeg  ¼ teaspoon McCormick Rum Extract With Other Natural Flavors

DIRECTIONS

1. Fill cocktail shaker ⅔ full with ice. 2. Add cream, white chocolate liqueur, nutmeg and rum flavor; shake until well mixed and chilled. 3. Strain into a martini glass. 4. Serve immediately. Recipe courtesy of McCormick

The Daily Meal

The holiday season is filled with traditional foods and drinks. In the United States, families often build gingerbread houses or bake Christmas cookies in December. In Puerto Rico, however, no Navidad is complete without the country’s Christmas cocktail, coquito. Much like eggnog, coquito is a smooth and creamy drink, but there’s a tropical twist. The classic recipe is typically a combination of evaporated

milk, condensed milk, coconut milk, cinnamon and white rum. However, there are many variations on how to make coquito, and the recipe is often passed down from generation to generation. You can drink this holiday cocktail all year-round, but it is usually a staple to kick off the Christmas season in Puerto Rico. It is typically prepared in batches so there’s more than enough for family and friends to enjoy. Making coquito is easy once you have the ingredients. Simply pour them into a carafe or pitcher. Then, chill it in the fridge before serving and garnish with cinnamon or nutmeg on top.

A twist on a

holiday classic DIAMOND BRIDGES

The Daily Meal

It may be a Christmas tradition that you’ve forgotten in adulthood, but as children, we knew it was important to leave out cookies for Santa on the night before Christmas. Of course, Santa Claus has a long journey delivering presents to young boys and girls, so why not help him relieve some stress with this holiday cocktail? Eggnog is a popular winter beverage that you can either make from scratch with your own recipe or buy it premade from the grocery store.

It’s simply made from beaten eggs, milk, cream and very often made boozy with whiskey. While not traditional ‘nog, this martini has the decadent, comforting flavors of the holiday. While this recipe doesn’t include eggs, it still has a nice creamy texture from the light cream and white chocolate liqueur. So if you’re trying to think of the perfect beverage to serve at your Christmas gathering or to leave on the top for Santa, this eggnog martini recipe is the way to go. Serve it in a martini glass topped with ground nutmeg.

GREEN SHOOT MEDIA

oliday shoppers can give the local arts community a shot in the arm by browsing their wares this holiday season. Keep an eye out for local arts and crafts shows, or, if you’re part of an organization that can, consider hosting one yourself for the holidays.

Exposure

Many talented artists that are just getting started creating can’t afford their own storefronts. They may partner with local businesses to showcase their art or they may join craft fairs

around the region. Shop local and give these artists the exposure and funding they need to grow their businesses. Make sure to share posts of your gift (after you give it, of course) on social media to give them an additional boost.

Get locally festive

Add some local flair to your holiday decor by shopping local artisans’ holiday collections. You can often find ornaments that are great ways to commemorate a special time or place. Think decorated sea shells from a beach town or ornaments with other local references. These make great gifts, too, even if the recipient doesn’t live in your town. It’s a great way to personalize a gift and make sure family and friends think of you

when they’re decorating their own tree.

Shopping local outside your town

Chances are, a short day trip away is another adorable town full of quirky gifts that will fit anyone on your list. Hop in the car and make a day of shopping, with stops at the local coffee shops and eateries for refreshment. You just might discover your new favorite store, right in your own back yard. Another way to shop local is to browse online stores like Etsy and filter the results by geographic location. That way, you can find artisans in your town that may not go to craft fairs or have enough money for their own storefront yet. It may save you on shipping, too.

CHEERS for the holidays Stock your bar in advance for the festivities ahead KATHRYN WEBER

Tribune News Service

T

he holiday season has arrived and guests will be knocking on your door through the end of the year, jazzed to enjoy some good cheer. Make your parties merrier by stocking your cocktail bar in advance for those who will be drinking alcohol. Then, you’ll have more time to spend decorating and creating delicious hors d’oeuvres, dips and other treats. Better still, you’ll be ready to serve your guests in style.

The basics

Every home bar needs some standard fare, including vodka, gin, tequila, scotch, bourbon and rum. You can create a myriad of cocktails from this list alone. To round out your selections, be sure to stock red and white wine, sparkling wine and beer. For after-dinner lounging by the fire, consider a sherry or port wine.

FOTOLIA VIA TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE

Glassware

You can host an elegant holiday party without investing in a variety of specialty glasses. A good all-purpose wine glass is fine for either red or white wine, although you truly do need a coupe or flute for champagne. In your bar set lineup, include a beer and liqueur glass, an old-fashion glass for either scotch or bourbon drinkers, or those who want rum and cola.

Accessories, garnishes and mixers You can go all out and bartend for your guests, or simply offer to put together some simple drinks. Standard tools include a cocktail shaker, long stirring spoon, waiter’s corkscrew, ice bucket, mixing pitcher, tongs, jiggers, cocktail picks and stirrers. Consider using large, square ice cube molds. Having a single large cube ready for your scotch or bourbon drinkers is a nice touch. Don’t forget some attractive cocktail napkins. Before guests arrive, fill a small divided dish with lemon and lime peels and wedges, olives and maraschino cherries. Stock a couple of mixers, too, like bitters, club soda, tonic water, ginger ale and cola. With this combination, you should be able to make enough drink combinations to satisfy most any guest. To crank up the fun factor, try crafting a batch of specialty cocktails just for the party. To make things truly easy, opt for punch and serve it in coupe glasses. Punch can be made ahead and serving is a snap, as you can add sparkling wine at the last moment. Try a unique garnish, such as stem of rosemary, or a wedge of lime with cranberries on a toothpick. Your guests will relish such special touches.

Along with a range of beverages, be sure to supply garnishes for your guests.
